Historic Lewes Farmers Market

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) welcomes audiences of the Rehoboth Jazz Festival to its special jazz weekend market on Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 9:00 am to noon in the parking lot of the Shields Elementary School off Savannah Road at Sussex Drive in Lewes. DE. Convenient parking can be found at the adjacent Lewes School parking lot.

Visitors to the market will be able to shop for the freshest produce available while enjoying the seductive musical notes of Everett Spells, a nationally known jazz saxophonist wandering throughout the market in celebration of the 2019 Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. Mr. Spells will entertain from 10:00 am until Noon.

The HLFM’s wonderful group of vendors includes those who are certified as organic as well as those who are committed to growing their products using sustainable agricultural methods.

Visitors to the HLFM Farmers Market on October 19 can expect to find the freshest fall produce available such as apples, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, and much more. Jams, jellies, cider, baked goods, eggs, artisan breads, dairy products, and pasture raised chicken, lamb, pork and beef will also be available. Some of our creative vendors will offer special jazz-themed products for sale in honor of the Rehoboth Jazz Festival. You might just find a small touch of New Orleans in Lewes, Delaware on that market day.

Farmers markets are an ancient method used by farmers worldwide to sell their produce directly to the consumer. Fortunately, there is now a burgeoning movement to bring farmers markets back, and we in Lewes are proud to be a part of that worldwide effort. This type of agriculture supports vibrant rural communities and produces wholesome food for everyone. Sustainable practices lend themselves to smaller, family-sized farms. These smaller farms are most successful within local food systems, selling at least part of what is grown directly to consumers at farmers markets. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market strives to connect people with one another, the land, and the source of our food. Know your farmer, know your food!

The HLFM operates its fall market every Saturday morning from October 5, 2019 through November 23, 2019, from 9:00 am to noon in the parking lot of the Shields Elementary School, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive. If you are in town prior to the fall market season, the HLFM regular market is open through September 28, 2019 at the George H. P. Smith Park at the intersection of Dupont and Johnson Avenues from 8:00 am – Noon.

The HLFM wants to make the freshest and healthiest foods available to all. To further this goal, HFLM accepts SNAP/EBT (formerly known as food stamps), WIC (Women, Infants & Children) and SFMNP senior coupons, and operates a gleaning program. To our SNAP customers, HLFM offers a bonus bucks program that matches SNAP debits dollar for dollar up to $20, providing an individual with up to $40 worth of purchasing power while costing the SNAP buyer just $20. Many of our vendors voluntarily participate in our gleaning program at the end of each market, by contributing unsold products to Casa San Francisco, a shelter for homeless adults, as well as an emergency food pantry, located in Milton, DE.

So, while you are enjoying the performances of many awesome jazz musicians at the Jazz Festival, we hope you will visit the Historic Lewes Farmers Market on Saturday morning October 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 Noon to meet our vendors, talk with them about eating healthy and living sustainably, and to enjoy some of the freshest products available. All of this while enjoying some splendid jazz notes performed by saxophonist, Everett Spells from 10:00 am - Noon.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market thanks the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival for our partnership and sends best wishes to all associated with the festival. Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!!
